The Offline WebRTC Hack
WebRTC is designed for peer-to-peer communication, meaning the actual file transfer happens locally. The only reason WebRTC needs the internet is for the initial "handshake" (the SDP Offer and Answer).
We asked ourselves: If the internet is down, can we perform this handshake physically?
Yes. By deeply compressing the WebRTC SDP packets using pako (zlib) algorithms, we shrunk the massive network handshake into a dense but easily scannable QR code.
How to Use Offline Connect
- Open Textunnel: If you've loaded Textunnel before, your browser has already cached it for offline use (PWA).
- Click Offline Mode: Tap the "Wifi Off" icon in the top right corner.
- Device A (Host): Click "Generate Connect QR". Your device will gather its local IP address and generate a QR code.
- Device B (Guest): Click "Scan Connect QR" and scan Device A's screen. Device B will then generate a response QR code.
- Final Handshake: Device A scans Device B's response.
BOOM. The devices are now securely paired over your local network. You can drag and drop gigabytes of files, and they will transfer at full Wi-Fi router speeds—with absolutely zero bytes touching the public internet.
